Simple Sunday Prayer
"...who sinned..." John 9:2
Who sinned? Who is to blame? Who can we point our fingers at, shout with sacred hatred and crucify for all that drives us insane? Who sinned might be our favorite question to ask, and yet…is it helpful?
Since Eve first caught blame from her partner Adam, humanity loves to identify the one who is wrong, the source of conflict, the body to blame. Yet, the outcomes of sin don’t need a source. The reality of human error doesn’t care who get the credit. The effects of our fragile and inflated egos don’t care who gets the gold star of origination. Instead, sin only seeks to divide, drive distance and inspire denial that despite our mistakes, faults and detrimental access to power, we are good. Very good made in the image of our kind and generous creator whom has chosen to share all of God’s great gifts with us, wretched sinners who often know no better.
Who sinned Lord?
Why do you forgive?
Where will this redemption lead?
Patient and protective God, heal us from our sin, remind us of your presence that is inescapable, lead us to live new despite the faults, failures and falling short we tend to. With trust in your pursuing grace, we pray. Amen.
